FOREST SERIES

As a child I was quite intrigued by forests. They scared me a little because someone could just step from behind a tree, but more than that I loved the magic of the forest and all its treasures. Running the winding paths, playing between trees, looking for chestnuts and mushrooms; the forrest was an endless source of play. Now that I'm a grown up and walk my dog in the forest, I still love the winding paths, the seasonal changes and the filtered morning light. As an artist I see interesting shapes and compositions, gorgeous patterns and structures. In a different way the forrest is again an endless source of play and inspiration.   Why this series? The forest next to our house has been on the news frequently as it has the Natura 2000 status, which means that its habitats are under pressure, mainly because of nitrogen emissions. To bring back the forest in its original state parts of the forest will be closed off, dogs will be banned and exciting winding paths will be shut down, taking the magic out of the forest. This tension between nature and mankind I find very interesting. At what cost can we justify the survival of certain species? Should we intervene or let nature run its course? With this forest series I visualize how I experience the forest and try to capture its magic and beauty, bringing the forest closer to us.
